Wednesday Support – Why You Should Letter Your Comics – Carman Kay

This post is a repost of another blogger I came across in my searches for resources for aspiring comic artists. Please enjoy and check out Carman Kay’s website here.

Out of everything I have been passively practicing on in my recent comics, I have not thoroughly garnered such a sense of love for this until just recently. And that is: the awesomeness of Lettering. Lettering comics nowadays, especially in webcomics isn’t as common as it used to be with the fact that it’s a […]

Wednesday Night – Why I blog

Evening all,

I was recently asked by a computer of all things, why I blog. So I thought I would share with you all my vision for this website and why I blog.

I am aspiring to be a comic writer. Writing a blog is a means to an end.

  1. It helps me develop my craft.
  2. It’s an outlet to meet other creative minded types.
  3. I like sharing resources and guides that have been shared with me or that I have come across.
  4. And It raises my own profile as a writer.

I know that on my site I also mention that this blog is also about my musical side which is something that I’ve been doing for over 15 years. So this site will host another aspect that I wish to share with people. The reasons;

  1. It encourages me to compose for new mediums out width of popular music.
  2. It gets me to develop my musical ability full stop.

So were do I see this blog going? Well I thought I would put some measurable targets for my career in comics. I hope to revisit these when I get to these milestones but this will shoe you were I want to go. So here we go;

  1. 12 months from the completion of this post I will have one finished 22 page comic of Resurrection Men available to the viewing public on this site that will be released one page at a time over the course of 22 weeks. I hope to have lettered the comic myself.
  2. 24 months after this blog post I hope to have at least two issues completed  of Resurrection Men available to view online and maybe consider running a kickstarter where I will get the remaining two issues of the series drawn up and hopefully have people who would like to purchase a trade paperback of all four issues. I hope to have lettered my comic again but also offer my services to other creators.
  3. 36 months after this blog post I hope to have four issues of my comic Resurrection Men published digitally (for free through my website), have run a successful Kickstarter campaign that allows supporters of my project to be able to buy a trade paperback of the series and have started a new second series and also have enough money saved/earned through my own savings and hopefully through Kickstarter to pay for the next issue of the new series. I would also like to share my work at the London Comic Con if I’m still based in East England. The idea being that the previous Kickstarter will fund the next. I should point that I intend to finance my first series of four issues from my own savings.

So yeah there we have it. Hopefully, this will show you were I see this is going.

Regards,

N.S. Paul

Friday Comic – My Teeth! (Comic)

Good morning everyone,

I am very proud to showcase my second finished comic. The script for My Teeth! was shared last Friday and you can pick it up here.

Like my last finished comic, My Teeth! was created through the comic creators group I work with and this theme was all about dinosaurs.  I changed the title of the story to be named after the character of the story.

Like the previous comic, I took a stab at lettering. I was having to rush on this one so I could meet the deadline for releasing it in a week. I would have looked to move some sound effects behind the characters but its currently beyond my skill level at the moment. Hoping to make improvements moving forward for the next story.

Friday Comic – Home (Comic)

Good morning everyone,

I am very pleased and proud to release my first finished comic to the world. Home was part of a biweekly comic circle I currently take part in were the writers are given a theme and have to write a four panel one page script in one week. The following week, a random artist will be picked and draw said scripts again within a week.

In this case the theme was ‘space’ and I saw an opportunity to take a previous short story and make it into a comic book. This was also my first attempt at lettering a piece of comic work and I’m fairly pleased with the outcomes.

You can download the comic in higher definition here or read continue to read below.

As part of this project I also ended up lettering another artists/writers work which you can see below or again download from here.

Wednesday Support – Lettering and colouring resources

Good morning,

This week I’ve got two resources that I have really found useful in developing not only my lettering skills but also my colouring skills.

cbl1-2

The first comes from Comicraft and is all about lettering. I’ve found this guide really helpful due to the references to Adobe Illustrator and the different approaches to not only speech bubbles but to SFX and additional tips and tricks for lettering. You can pick up your copy from most retailers.

finished_hunter_preview

The second is a free resource for colouring. I found this really clear and easy to follow and I’m looking forward to exploring this technique with black and white art. You can check out the resource here.

See you next Wednesday.

All the best,

N. S. Paul

Wednesday Support – Lettering resources, anthologies, Kickstarter and new work

Now that I am back in full swing at my day job it is harder to do as many updates as I would like but I have managed to come across some excellent resources in my limited downtime.

Resources

The first comes from letterer Jim Campbell (@CampbellLetters & clickflicklettering) who has worked with publishing companies such as 2000AD, BOOM! Studios, Image Comics, Titan Comics, Heavy Metal and Dark Horse to name a few. I came across his guides on the 2000AD forums and I have massive respect for his teaching ethic. Since I found his resources, Jim has been kind enough to point me in the direction to more resources for lettering on his blog through Twitter. I’ve always had a massive amount of respect and gratitude to working professionals who are willing to spend a little time helping amateurs develop their skills to join the industry. So Jim Campbell, thank you! (FYI – you should check out his blog already).

Anthologies

There’s a been several new anthologies and submissions that I’ve come across in the last few weeks. Hopefully you can get to submitting to these soon!

Kickstarters

So let’s talk new comics! I’ve been scouring Kickstarter for new potential material to read and some have caught my eye that I thought I would share. I am no way affiliated with these comic creators. I actually came across their work because of Twitter and I ended following a couple of additional Kickstarters through their social media.

The first is “Ness #2” written by Chris Welsh and art by Robert Carey. I wish I could tell you more about it but I was totally sold on H. P. Lovecraft, Hellboy and Scottish mix. I’m now just waiting for Issue 1 and Issue 2 to be delivered when the Kickstarter finishes. FYI, this Kickstarter has already succeeded but you can still get involved and support the creators.

The second Kickstarter is Deer Editor: Hack.

deer-editor-vol-3-hack-1

Written by Ryan K Lindsay and art by Sami Kivelä Again if I’m honest, I’m supporting this Kickstarter mostly because of the artwork and the title of the work. And considering the entry point of supporting this comic and the fact that it had already met it’s financial target I had nothing to loose supporting it. Again I am not affiliated with the two Kickstarters above but they just look so damn cool, so check them out and pledge!

New material

Your still here? Fantastic! I’ve recently put my most recent drafts of original scripts on the website. You can check them out at the comics page. I’d recommend “Home” and “My Hero” for short starting points. Please keep in mind these are working drafts and will be updated.

In the interim, have a good Friday.
